A noteworthy review of True Spy Stories from Booklist on April 1, 2021

Cover: World War II Spy Stories

This entry in the True Spy Stories series (6 titles) begins with a bullet-pointed list of ‘fast facts,’ setting readers up with background information on WWII and spying that gives necessary context to the coming stories. From there, five chapters highlight five individual spies who played important roles in the war, for the Axis as well as Allies Subjects include famed performers Josephine Baker and Claire Phillips, and while accounts are rather brief, they each include a few specifics on how the spies learned and transferred information—by charming audience members, fitting notes into shoe heels, developing elaborate double-agent cover—which young readers will find engaging. Back matter includes discussion questions, a glossary, index, and further resources. A light but entertaining primer on the WWII spy game.
