A noteworthy review of Community Helpers from Booklist on November 1, 2022

Cover: Coaches

The Community Helpers series provides a solid starting point for young readers who are interested in exploring possible careers. Each title begins by introducing a young child who is interested in the community job discussed and encourages readers to find a professional working in the career and ask them questions. Titles also touch upon each job’s origins, salary, and outlook. Coaches describes what coaches do, the traits and skills needed for this job, and the different types of sports and levels at which they can work. Delivery Workers details the experience and characteristics needed in this line of work as well as the physical demands and changing nature of the job. Librarians introduces a public librarian and discusses different tasks performed by librarians, tools of the trade, education requirements, and how the role of a librarian may change in the future. Nurses discusses the profession’s education requirements, pointing out the importance of math and science, valuable personality traits (e.g., empathy and good listening skills) in practitioners, and the important work nurses do in different healthcare settings. In each volume, red, bolded vocabulary words are defined in a glossary, and recommended books and websites are also included. A good introduction into jobs that keep communities running.
